While it may be familiar information for those working in the hospital payment world for years, CDI professionals can nevertheless use CMS’ release of the revised Acute Care Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Fact Sheet as an educational opportunity for clinicians or new staff.
The Fact Sheet provides general information about the basis for IPPS payment, IPPS payment rates, and how IPPS payment rates are set. It explains the Medicare Severity (MS)-Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) system, CCs/MCCs, and the impact of the case mix on the relative weight of a given DRG.
The six-page document won’t answer every payment question, certainly, but it does offer a quick overview of topics CDI discuss every day.
