Tip: Prepare for new MCCs effective October 1

As a reminder, several new codes have been designated as complications/comorbidities (CCs) and major CCs by CMS, effective October 1. Following are new MCCs of which CDI specialists should be aware:
  • Tumor lysis syndrome (277.88)
  • Puerperal (postpartum) sepsis (670.22 and 670.24)
  • Puerperal (postpartum) septic thrombophelbitis (670.32 and 670.34)
  • Other major puerperal (postpartum) infection (670.80, 670.82 and 670.84)
  • Omphalocele (756.72)
  • Gastroschisis (756.73)
  • Severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (768.73)
  • Bilious vomiting in newborn (779.32)
