HHS’ interim final rule on breach notification, which takes effect September 23, includes some interesting numbers on HIPAA covered entities and business associates:

  • 605,845 – entities classified under the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) 62, which includes physicians, dentists, ambulatory care centers, kidney dialysis centers, family planning clinics, home care services, mental health and drug rehabilitation centers, medical laboratories, hospitals and nursing facilities
  • 107,567 – HHS estimate of suppliers of durable medical equipment and prosthetics
  • 1,045 – insurance firms
  • 3,522 – third-party administrators
  • 3,266 – or 71 percent, of those insurance firms and third party administrators that meet the Small Business Association’s definition of a small entity of annual receipts of $7 million or less
