Q: Can we bill for supplies or implants that we opened but did not use? If so, how do we report them?
A: Although no specific scenario is given, based on Program Memorandum A-02-129, which is based on devices with pass-through status, you can report wasted implants on the patient bill in the following cases:
- Implant has been inserted and then removed
- Implant insertion attempted but unsuccessful during a patient procedure
Do not report the wasted implant when:
- Implant has not been in contact with the patient
- Implant was opened, contaminated, or the wrong size, but was not used
