Hospitals should take a tiered approach when establishing sanction policies that consider various factors, says Beth Hjort, RHIA, CHPS, manager of professional practice resources at AHIMA in Chicago. Well-thought-out policies can help set a serious tone that may prevent breaches or at least demonstrate to employees that the hospital won’t be take them lightly, she says.
