Coders need to be aware of a new set of E codes that detail injuries sustained by military personnel.
The new codes (E990.1–E998.9) identify specific injuries due to war operations, including but not limited to those caused by fragments from munitions, person-borne improvised explosive device, and piercing object.
Be sure to look for injuries sustained during military service and remind physicians at your facility to inquire about these injuries.
This tip was adapted from the article “New ICD-9-CM codes increase specificity” in the August issue of the HCPro newsletter Briefings on APCs.
