Q: My question pertains to CPT code 96376 (therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection [specify substance or drug]; each additional sequential intravenous push of the same substance/drug provided in a facility [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]). Is reporting an IVP push of the same substance/and or drug in a facility, specifically an emergency room, with 96376 appropriate?
A: The CPT descriptor for 96376 states that is why the AMA created this code. The parenthetical notes that follow the code instruct providers not to report it if the sequential push is administered within 30 minutes of a reported push of the same substance or drug. The parenthetical notes also state that only facilities may report this code. So, as long as these two requirements are met, facilities may report this code.
