Until now hospitals had difficulty determining if and when Medicare would cover PET scans for certain diagnoses.
CMS issued a final national coverage analysis (NCA) reconsidering coverage for several types of solid tumors during April. However, facilities still must:
-
Be sure they understand the NCD and its exceptions
-
Be aware of their local FI’s or MAC’s requirements
-
Ensure necessary departments and personnel are informed
-
Ensure providers inform patients about the new policy
This tip was adapted from the article “Carefully review CMS’ national coverage anaylsis on PET scans” from the July issue of Briefings on APCs.
