HHS released a report on its progress over the first 100 days of the Obama Administration, citing its recent draft guidance on securing PHI.

“The talented staff at the Department of Health and Human Services has made tremendous progress in 100 days toward our shared mission of making the government more accountable to the American people,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 calls for the adoption of EHRs for every American by 2014, and that comes with greater privacy and security requirements regarding a patient’s PHI.

The HHS report, released April 29, mentions how HHS solicited public input before the draft guidance becomes final by August 17.

HHS also established two Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) committees, one to make recommendations on interoperability standards, and one to make policy recommendations to inform the standards development process. The goal of the committees is to “ensure that health IT systems can share information in a nationwide health IT infrastructure,” according to HHS.
