Ten tips to successfully scan your way to an EHR

When should you start scanning? Should you scan on-site? How many full-time staffers do you need to perform this function? What should you ask potential vendors? These are just a few of the questions HIM directors need to answer as they embark on the long and bumpy road to an EHR. Consider the following tips to ensure a smooth transition:

Weigh the pros and cons of scanning on-site. According to MRB’s February scanning productivity benchmarking survey, 92% of the 156 respondents who said they scan records employ in-house staff to perform the function on-site. Eight percent reported employing an outsourced vendor. When in-house staff members or an outsourced vendor perform the function on-site, directors maintain some degree of oversight, allowing them to easily access records that are in the process of being scanned, says Rose T. Dunn, RHIA, CPA, FACHE, FHFMA, chief operating officer at First Class Solutions, Inc., in Maryland Heights, MD.
