An HCPro, Inc. survey of nearly 300 privacy and security officers suggests most (68%) of hospitals train their employees on HIPAA annually. Another 4% said they conduct training monthly.
That may change in light of the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law February 17. In the HCPro, Inc. survey, “HIPAA training for new laws,” 98% of HIPAA privacy and security officers said they would revisit their HIPAA training programs in response to the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, which includes the HIPAA provisions in the economic stimulus Act.
According to the survey, HIPAA privacy and security officers plan to:
- Conduct an internal audit: 62%
- Conduct additional training: 59%
- Rewrite polices: 53%
- Acquire resources to educate themselves: 31%
The Act includes provisions for heightened enforcement of HIPAA and stiffer penalties for privacy and security violations, as well as billions of dollars to invest into electronic health records implementation and exchange. The Act also calls for extending HIPAA security provisions to business associates.
