October 1, 2013, is the deadline by which HIM directors must implement ICD-10 at their hospitals. Coordinating a smooth transition means holding your vendors accountable by asking them these questions:
- Will your system be ready for ICD-10 implementation by October 1, 2013?
- Do you have any programs or products that demonstrate how you plan to address the transition?
- Will your system be able to accommodate both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes during the transition?
- Will you help educate users and make the transition easier for them?
- Can you assist with the data translation and conversion?
Editor’s note: This tip was adapted from the March issue of Medical Records Briefing.
