Q. Please give an example of when to use modifier -58 in the ED.
A. It’s hard to think of a situation in which you would use this modifier in the ED, as you would typically use it for staged or related procedures during a postoperative period. EDs refer surgical procedures performed by ED physicians out to a specialist for follow-up.
When patients come back to the ED for a recheck instead of going to their private physician or specialist, you should charge an ED visit level using the hospital’s individual ED facility assessment criteria.
