The economic stimulus plan, which includes money earmarked for HIPAA enforcement, is due on President Barack Obama’s desk February 16, the Associated Press reported.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) told the AP that Congress was almost finished with the $787 billion economic plan.

Lawmakers reviewed the 1,071-page bill overnight February 12 before debate kicked off the next morning. The House approved the plan later in the afternoon with a vote of 246-183, The New York Times reported Friday, February 12.

The HIPAA enforcement provisions in the legislation includes:

  • The requirement to notify those affected by a breach of health information within 60 days
  • The requirement to notify local news media if a breach involves more than 500 residents in that area
  • The requirement to notify the HHS secretary immediately in breaches involving more than 500 people
