A: On January 13, Medicare announced the launch of its personal health record (PHR) Choice pilot program in Arizona and Utah. The program will allow beneficiaries with original Medicare to maintain personal health information electronically. Medicare will, in turn, add claims data directly to the PHR of the beneficiary’s choice.
"With up-to-date, accurate and accessible personal health records, Medicare beneficiaries avoid the pitfalls of paper records by having critical information available when they need to make healthcare decisions," U.S. Department Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said in a CMS press release that announced the launch.
Beneficiaries will choose one of several PHR products offered by companies that Medicare selected for the pilot, including ones that are free and ones that offer additional features (e.g., adding notes from healthcare providers and other sources of health information) for an extra fee. CMS contractor Noridian Administrative Services will coordinate the program.
