Pay attention to new details in all three categories of CPT codes

For many coders, the Category II and Category III sections of the CPT manual have no higher purpose than to keep the numerical section apart from the alphabetical index. The word choices in the Category I codes may seem like no big deal. However, there is much more to all of them, especially in 2009.

Examples of these changes include that nearly half the new codes for 2009—147—fall into Category II.  Many changes to existing Category I codes appear to be part of an effort to increase the logic of the manual. Category III codes recognize and allow coding for new and emerging technology, and they frequently have a relationship to existing Category I codes.
