How this concept affects your payment

Buried in the 2009 OPPS final rule’s 1,800-plus pages is a discussion of a fiscal phenomenon called charge compression. If the lack of provider comments is any indicator, the concept has made little impression on providers.

It should. It lies close to the heart of many differences between the provider community and CMS. Including the discussion in the final rule is CMS’ first full acknowledgment that the problem exists.
