RAC appeals on the rise according to new CMS statistics

CMS revised its July 2008 RAC appeal update to include appeals statistics through August 31, 2008. According to the update, providers appealed 22.5% of RAC denials. Of all RAC overpayment determinations, only 7.6% were overturned on appeal. Statistics show that prior to the update (and as of June 30, 2008) providers chose to appeal only 19.6% of RAC denials. Only 6.8% were overturned on appeal. Click here to read the most recent appeal update.
