Confront ROI challenges: Proceed with caution in situations involving sensitive conditions

Sensitive scenarios require extra attention when releasing protected health information. Ensure that your release of information (ROI) staff members can accurately assess and respond to situations involving mental and behavioral health, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS status.

Mental health information is typically considered a category of patient information that requires greater confidentiality protections. State regulations and facility policies vary widely with respect to this category of patient information.

Generally, facility directories do not list these patients—commonly referred to as clients—as participants in a behavioral or mental health program to protect their identities.
