West Virginia government officials may have violated HIPAA’s privacy rule when they released the name of one of their employees projected for a psychiatric evaluation December 18, the Herald Mail of Hagerstown, MD reported.
The purchase order logs accidentally included the individual’s name and medical records. The Berkeley County’s government officials provided the logs to four media organizations at one of their commission meetings, during which the officials normally dispense all pending expenses. The individual’s psychiatric evaluation was listed as an expense. It is unclear how exactly the name managed to appear in the logs.
