These days, the words “recovery audit contractor” (RAC) are on every HIM director’s mind, and this should come as no surprise to anyone.
CMS announced in an October 6, 2008, press release the names of four permanent national RACs to be rolled out by 2010, along with the contingency fees that each will receive when they successfully identify overpayments.
In a recent development, CMS announced November 3, 2008, that it has delayed the RAC program due to a “RAC protest and stay of performance.” The result is a moratorium on all RAC-related information sessions nationwide. But that doesn’t mean that directors can sit back and relax.
