Care New England, a three-hospital system in Rhode Island, was familiar with the acronym PHR (personal health record) long before a quick Google search would yield more than 400,000 hits. Today’s savvy patient can search the Internet to find a variety of free PHRs from which to choose, but according to Care New England, empowering and educating patients, rather than beating the competition, is what matters most.
“We felt that it was relatively low cost for us to do, it generated some goodwill in the community, and it allowed us to make some meaningful offerings on our public Web site,” says Cedric J. Priebe III, MD, senior vice president and chief information officer at Care New England in Providence, RI.
