New codes for secondary diabetes became effective October 1. Coder understanding of the origin of secondary diabetes is important because it can help ensure coding compliance. The American Diabetes Association advises coders to be on the lookout for the eight specific causes of secondary diabetes.
When a physician documents one of these diagnoses with a consideration of diabetes, remember the possible relationships between the two and do not automatically assign a 250.xx code for diabetes mellitus.
