The Joint Commission posted an FAQ November 24 that pertains to acceptable abbreviations. For example, hospitals can develop a standardized list of abbreviations or use a published reference source. However, when hospitals use multiple abbreviations, symbols, or acronyms for the same term, the hospitals must identify what it will use to eliminate any ambiguity.
