The Joint Commission posted an FAQ November 24 that pertains to acceptable abbreviations. In it, The Joint Commission states that hospitals must take reasonable approaches to standardizing abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols. For example, hospitals can develop a standardized list of abbreviations or use a published reference source. However, when hospitals use multiple abbreviations, symbols, or acronyms for the same term, the hospitals must identify what it will use to eliminate any ambiguity.
