Hospitals have been waiting for finalized wage indexes and standardized payment rates since CMS released tentative numbers in its fiscal year (FY) 2009 IPPS final rule in August.

The new calculations mean new classifications and unexpected payment rates for some hospitals. They also signal a greater likelihood for errors during the transition from old to new rates.
