CMS delivered the 2009 HCPCS level II updates on Halloween instead of candy.
This is the annual scheduled release of modifications to the HCPCS code set. Changes are effective January 1, 2009, with quarterly updates continuing through the calendar year.
The CMS announcement focused special attention on CMS’ coding decision for skin substitute products, but the immediate effect was simply to substitute a new code series, Q4100-Q4115, for the existing codes, all but one of which are in the J section.
The CMS press release states that the code changes are to “facilitate accurate coding of these products.” They do not reflect payment determinations.
