AHIMA reiterates importance of protecting privacy and security of health records

HIM-HIPAA Insider, November 10, 2008

The recent rash of privacy and security breaches involving high-profile victims illustrates the need for everyone to remember the importance of protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of health records, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) said in a November 6 press release.

And that includes covered entities, employers, the media, and consumers. “It’s critical for healthcare professionals to receive more education about good privacy practices and appropriate interpretation of HIPAA and other regulations,” AHIMA president Wendy Mangin said in the press release.

The announcement also highlighted a resolution recently approved by AHIMA’s House of Delegates. That resolution asks:
  • AHIMA members to urge healthcare organizations to educate health information users about the need for improved and consistent privacy and security
  • HIM staff members to play a significant role in educating others with respect to auditing and monitoring access
  • AHIMA to support consistent policies and standards in the event of a breach
