Health insurer Medical Mutual of Ohio believes insufficient postage is to blame for the recent loss of data on 36,000 retirees, The Columbus Dispatch reported October 24.
The data, contained on disks and mailed in 11 packages, pertained to members and employees of the School Employee Retirement System, the State Teachers Retirements System, the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund and the Ohio Highway Patrol Retirement System, according to the newspaper.
"Our investigation, so far, indicates that insufficient postage was placed on the envelopes, therefore we believe they are likely to still be safe within the postal system," Jared Chaney, Medical Mutual chief communications officer and executive vice president, said in a statement.
Ray Jacobs, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, told The Columbus Dispatch that there was no way to track the missing packages or even confirm that Medical Mutual mailed them.
