Your leadership skills are invaluable when you’re implementing an EHR or overseeing any other type of change management process because these skills can ease the anxiety of those around you during a transitional period. But if your leadership needs fine-tuning, where should you start? Determining which qualities you feel a strong leader embodies is a logical first step. Several HIM experts offer their thoughts on what qualities a strong leader must possess.

Amy Watters, MA, RHIA, assistant professor and HIM graduate program director of the department of healthcare informatics and information management at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, says a leader has a commitment to organizationwide communication.

“It is important that an HIM leader be committedto involving users and connecting people—from administration to patient care to information technology,” Watters says.
