When someone says ICD-10, most HIM professionals roll their eyes and wait for the punch line.

Despite much discussion during the past decade, the United States continues to be the only industrialized nation not using an ICD-10-based system for morbidity reporting purposes. On August 22, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a proposed rule that would set the ICD-10 implementation date for October 2011, but directors aren’t rushing to dissect the complicated coding system or provide staff training.

A recent posting on MRB Talk reveals that many HIM directors are biding their time and waiting for afinal rule before they devote any real attention to what will be the largest clinical modification in more than30 years. MRB talkers overwhelmingly concur thatother regulatory changes and recovery audit contractors have taken precedence over the elusive ICD-10.
