A: The State Alliance for e-Health, a consensus-based, executive-level organization of governors, state legislators, attorney generals, and state commissioners, released its inaugural report last month that addresses various challenges and advantages to creating state health information exchanges (HIE). The report, "Accelerating Progress: Using Health Information Technology and Electronic Health Information Exchange to Improve Care," addresses topics such as:
- Privacy and security concerns
- Technical standards for interoperability
- Provider implementation costs
- The relation between HIEs and quality care
