Salary survey: More responsibilities, little to no extra pay

“Overworked and underpaid” is the lament of many HIM directors who participated in HCPro’s annual Medical Records Briefing salary survey: 58% of 310 respondents say members of the profession are not fairly compensated.
One contributing factor is the inordinate number of technological and regulatory changes that create new responsibilities and challenges for HIM directors, says Jean S. Clark, RHIA, service line director of health information at Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, SC. HIM directors play an important role that often goes unrecognized, Clark says, adding that “we still have a lot of work to do in raising that awareness.”
