On October 1, the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) will launch a certification program for health information exchanges (HIE) during which it will begin accepting applications for the first phase of inspection for 2009 HIE certification, according to a September 16 CCHIT press release.
"With health information exchange still being in an early developmental stage, we are offering a modular approach to certification that will accommodate the wide variety of organizations involved," Mark Leavitt, MD, PhD, commission chair, said in the press release. "First, all organizations will be required to satisfy uniform security criteria. Then, in the months to come, we will be rolling out inspections for various interoperability transactions, allowing HIEs to select which ones they choose to be certified for."
Individuals can provide feedback on the first draft of CCHIT certified 2009 criteria for ambulatory, child health, cardiovascular medicine, behavioral health, inpatient and emergency department EHRs, and personal health records (PHR) during the public comment period (September 29–October 28). CCHIT will publish draft criteria at http://cchit.org/participate/public-comment/. To view the press release, click here.
