CMS announced a revised timeline for the national rollout of the recovery audit contractor (RAC) program, according to the September 11 issue of AHA News Now. Although CMS must implement permanent RACs in all states by January 1, 2010, it will begin to provide education and outreach to providers in the first round of states on October 1, 2008, the second round on March 1, 2009, and the third round on or after August 1, 2009. AHA News Now reported that Tim Hill, of the CMS Office of Financial Management, stated during a recent meeting of regional, state, and metropolitan hospital executives in Washington, DC that hospitals in the first round will most likely not begin to receive demand letters or requests for medical records until January 2009.
