Effective October 1, coders will be able to report a code from the 249 category to denote secondary diabetes. They should be able to recognize potential causes of secondary diabetes, such as Cushing’s disease or cystic fibrosis. Encourage coders to visit www.diabetesexplained.com/secondary-diabetes-and-the-causes.html for a complete list of the causes of secondary diabetes, says Glenn Krauss, BBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPUR, FCS, PCS, C-CDIS, senior coding and chargemaster consultant at QHR in Brentwood, TN. Certain drugs, such as diuretics commonly prescribed for management of congestive heart failure, also can cause secondary diabetes.
