Modifier -58 indicates a staged or related procedure or service that the same physician performs during the postoperative period. Don’t use it to report the treatment of a problem that requires a return to the operating room. The physician may need to indicate that a procedure or service performed during the postoperative period was:
- Planned prospectively or at the time of the original procedure
- More extensive than the original procedure
- For therapy following a diagnostic surgical procedure
In these cases, report the appropriate CPT code for the staged procedure and append modifier -58. A new postoperative period begins when you bill the next procedure in the series.
