Over the years, CDI specialists have found simple and creative ways to obtain physician buy-in. Here are two:
Tip 1: Most CDI specialists place their query in the progress notes. But physicians can claim they never saw the query, even when specialists flag the query with a colored tab or post-it note. To combat this problem, use a paper clip to hold all progress notes together and clip the query on top. If a physician wants to read the progress notes, he or she has must read the query first. (Tip provided by Resurrection Hospital, Chicago)
Tip 2: To show your gratitude toward physicians who have improved their documentation, try the sweet approach. One hospital placed a small gold foil-wrapped box with the table setting for each physician who attended a staff dinner. Inside each box were three premium candies with a small note that said, ‘With appreciation, the clinical documentation program.’ (Tip provided by Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights, IL)
