Implement the new ESA transmittals in your hospital

In her presentation during HCPro’s April 10 audio conference, Simmons described technical steps for implementation of the new ESA transmittals based on changes she had made at M. D. Anderson.
Her goals were to:
Ensure a smooth transition. “The No. 1 thing that I wanted to try to accomplish was to minimize the disruption to the patient flow for the clinicians,” she said. “I wanted to make it as seamless as possible.”
Submit an accurate bill to Medicare.
Automate the process to avoid manual data entry. Simmons said she “wanted to find every way that we could to automate every process that we wanted to put in place to avoid having to manually touch a claim,” a step made essential by the increased workload on the billing process.
Prevent financial exposure by obtaining waivers for managed care commercial payers and ABNs for the Medicare population. Simmons said her facility recognized “a need to prevent … or mitigate the financial exposure that has been created by these two coverage decisions, both the local one [and] the NCD.”
