"Overworked and underpaid" is the lament of many HIM directors who participated in HCPro’s annual Medical Records Briefing salary survey. 58% of 310 respondents say members of the profession are not fairly compensated.
One contributing factor is the inordinate number of technological and regulatory changes that create new responsibilities and challenges for HIM directors, says Jean S. Clark, RHIA, service line director of health information at Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, SC. HIM directors play an important role that often goes unrecognized, Clark says. "We still have a lot of work to do in raising that awareness," she adds.
Although 45% of respondents say they earn at least $80,000, Clark says salaries should be higher, ideally in the high 90s, particularly for experienced directors who oversee numerous functions and staff members. The survey reveals that 35% of respondents oversee HIM functions in multiple settings, and 36% oversee more than 30 employees.
