Emphasize importance of coded data to prepare for proposed quality measure expansion

Editor’s note: This article went to press before CMS published its 2009 IPPS Final Rule that could finalize the expanded quality measures discussed below.

CMS has been busy; its latest proposal involves nearly doubling the number of quality measures, thereby increasing the emphasis on the importance of complete and accurate coding.

In its fiscal year (FY) 2009 proposed rule, CMS stated that it intends to add the following 43 new quality measures, bringing the total number of reportable measures to 72
