Editor’s note: This column is a continuation of our series on standards outside of the “Information Management” chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals that have documentation implications. Clark is the service line director for HIM at Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, SC, and author of Information Management: The Compliance Guide to The Joint Commission Standards, Fifth Edition, published by HCPro, Inc.

The behavioral healthcare restraint and seclusion standards apply to patients who have behavioral health issues. Hospitals should only reference these standards in an emergency situation or when the patient is at risk for harming him- or herself or another person.
