Tip of the week: Look for flexibility, adaptability when hiring a CDI specialist

CMS publishes new regulations every year that take effect each October. Although the changes may be minimal in some years, they are major in others. For example, the Medicare Severity DRGs that took effect October 1, 2007, meant major changes in documentation and complication and comorbidity assignment. There are also new DRG numbers, which affect database design and report flow. This is why CDI specialists must be able to roll with the punches and adapt to the inevitable regulatory changes. Be sure to ask CDI specialist candidates why they think they will enjoy the job and be successful in this role. Listen carefully to what they say—and also to what they don’t say.
