Boston Medical Center and its insurance plan have reached a settlement to pay more than $500,000 to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for sending improper marketing to some of its patients, The Boston Globe reported June 19.

The marketing consisted of letters promoting the medical center’s insurance plan sent to 2,600 patients, according to the article. Patients’ medical coverage data served as the selection criteria for determining who would receive the promotional materials.

The letters also informed patients that switching to the Boston Medical Center insurance plan was necessary to continue receiving treatment there, said state Attorney General Martha Coakley.
