A: Yes, CMS announced in Transmittal 354 dated June 13, 2008 that it will update the FISS to recognize the following hospitals that are exempt from POA reporting:
  • Long-term care hospitals
  • Inpatient rehabilitation facilities
  • Inpatient psychiatric facilities
  • Cancer hospitals
  • Children’s hospitals
  • Critical access hospitals
  • Maryland waiver hospitals
The FISS will add an “X” to the end of the POA indicator before it reaches the grouper. The “X” will instruct the grouper to not apply hospital-acquired condition logic. The transmittal will take effect October 1. For more information and to view the transmittal, visit the CMS Web site at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/transmittals/downloads/R354OTN.pdf.
