The inability to obtain timely information and details pertaining to the release of hospitalized suspects has frustrated some Wisconsin law enforcement officers and they say HIPAA is to blame, according to a June 15 article in the Green Bay Press Gazette.
HIPAA specifies which information healthcare providers may release to law enforcement personnel, but some provisions are open to interpretation, according to the article.
"The HIPAA issues related to law enforcement are extraordinarily complex," Beth DeLair, nurse, attorney, and president of the HIPAA Collaborative of Wisconsin, told the newspaper.
The HIPAA Collaborative, a nonprofit organization that analyzes and interprets HIPAA, says it is unclear whether a patient's discharge date must remain private, according to the article.
