Tip of the week: Focus on top six coding changes in the fiscal year 2009 IPPS proposed rule

According to Sue Bowman, RHIA, CCS, director of coding policy and compliance at American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in Chicago, coders should focus on the following coding changes now for several conditions so that they are prepared for implementation on October 1:
- Secondary diabetes
- Headaches (including migraines)
- Leukemia, multiple myeloma, or sarcoma in relapse
- Maternal and fetal complications from in utero procedures
- Stages of pressure ulcers
- Newborns affected by in utero or other surgical procedures performed on the mother
