According to Sue Bowman, RHIA, CCS, director of coding policy and compliance at American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in Chicago, coders should focus on the following coding changes now for several conditions so that they are prepared for implementation on October 1:

  • Secondary diabetes
  • Headaches (including migraines)
  • Leukemia, multiple myeloma, or sarcoma in relapse
  • Maternal and fetal complications from in utero procedures
  • Stages of pressure ulcers
  • Newborns affected by in utero or other surgical procedures performed on the mother
There are also 20 proposed new codes related to Pap smear results (795.xx and 796.xx), 11 new personal history codes (V13.xx and V87.4x), and eight new V87.xx codes related to contact with, or suspected exposure to, certain elements.

For more information on the proposed codes, view Table 6A of the fiscal year 2009 IPPS proposed rule at www.cms.hhs.gov/AcuteInpatientPPS/IPPS.
