Medicare FFS has made significant progress since the May 23 NPI-only deadline, with most Medicare contractors reporting that more than 90% of claims are compliant, according to a June 2 Communication on the CMS Web site.

CMS initially experienced “a number of rejections” for claims that were submitted with legacy numbers in the secondary provider identifier field, but reported significant progress  as providers recognize that the field should no longer contain legacy numbers.

CMS also announced that a limited number of accelerated financial hardship payments are available to providers who experience cash flow interruptions during the NPI-implementation process. More information is available on the CMS Web site.
