Coders may face the largest number of code changes in more than a decade if CMS finalizes the changes outlined in the fiscal year 2009 IPPS proposed rule released April 14.
Not only did the rule outline several changes, but the ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee also suggested additional changes CMS was unable to address prior to publication of the proposed rule. This means that the final rule could potentially include a laundry list of new, more specific codes.
This laundry list shouldn’t surprise coders who have been anxiously awaiting ICD-10, says Shannon McCall, RHIA, CCS, CPC, director of coding and HIM for HCPro, Inc., in Glen Allen, VA. “I think every year, the addition of new codes is attempting to bring the ICD-9-CM code set closer to transitioning to ICD-10-CM,” she says.
