With many U.S. hospitals operating in the red or just struggling to break even, fundraising is a crucial endeavor, according to a May 27 article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The newspaper’s survey of a dozen local medical centers and hospitals revealed that the majority solicit current or former patients for funding.

"It is part of our culture in America," Bill McGinly, president and chief executive of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, told the newspaper. "Universities and colleges have access to student records. Grateful patients are our alumni."

Joan Broner, a San Francisco resident who receives solicitations regularly, considers it an invasion of privacy. "If I'm sick and I go to a doctor, I don't want them telling anybody about it,” she told the newspaper. “My disease is not for sale."
