Coders may face the largest number of code changes in more than a decade if CMS finalizes the changes outlined in the fiscal year 2009 IPPS proposed rule released April 14.
Not only did the rule outline several changes, but the ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee also suggested additional changes CMS was unable to address prior to publication of the proposed rule. This means that the final rule could potentially include a laundry list of new, more specific codes.
This laundry list shouldn’t surprise coders who have been anxiously awaiting ICD-10, says Shannon McCall, RHIA, CCS, CPC, director of coding and HIM for HCPro, Inc., in Glen Allen, VA.
